Berry Plastics Corporation named June 2016 Manufacturer of the Month by Maryland MEP

COLUMBIA, Md. — Maryland MEP (MD MEP), a non-profit committed to growing and strengthening Maryland manufacturing, has announced the Berry Plastics Corporation as its June 2016 Make it in Maryland program’s Manufacturer of the Month recipient.

Berry Plastics, based in Evansville, Ind., is a leading global manufacturer and marketer of value-added plastic consumer packaging and engineered materials, generating $6.7 billion in revenue during fiscal 2015, with more than 120 manufacturing locations throughout the world. In addition to its Baltimore Plant, Berry Plastics operates two other Maryland manufacturing facilities in Hanover and Cumberland and has an aggregate employment of roughly 700 full-time Maryland employees. The Make it in Maryland program is Maryland’s first and only program dedicated to manufacturers within the state to showcase companies, demonstrating the value of manufacturing within Maryland and highlighting manufacturing successes.

“It is a great pleasure to have Berry Plastics as part of MD MEP’s Make it in Maryland program, supporting our programs and services,” said Brian Sweeney, Executive Director of Maryland MEP. “Berry Plastics has displayed a passion for manufacturing high quality products in Maryland, and the company represents exactly the type of company we’re proud to name as our Make it in Maryland program’s Manufacturer of the Month for June 2016.”

This recognition of success builds upon MD MEP and Berry Plastic’s mutualistic partnership that has developed through initiatives such as the creation of MD MEP’s first full-length manufacturing boot camp for various Baltimore-based manufacturers. Through the provision of a six-week program generated for unemployed and under-employed job candidates, Berry Plastics and MD MEP produced an assemblage of well-trained, employable workers ready to contribute at a high level in their industry.

As a leader in package innovation and design, Berry Plastics operates three major divisions: Health, Hygiene, and Specialties; Consumer Packaging; and Engineered Materials. Within each division, Berry Plastics offers a vast array of products that can be applied to a myriad of industries and markets such as industrial, building and construction, medical and personal care, retail, and much more. Berry Plastics also maintains a strong commitment to employee training and development, providing employees with 24/7 access to online learning systems with Berry University, and site-specific seminars and technical trainings.

“We are extremely honored to be named Maryland MEP Manufacturer of the Month,” said Bill Freyer, Plant Manager at Berry Plastics’ Baltimore facility. Working with Maryland MEP has been a tremendous opportunity for our facility. This partnership has allowed us to deliver high quality training to our employees and to promote advanced manufacturing careers in our community. We appreciate the support of the MD MEP and our state and local agencies to invest in employee training and development. These efforts, combined with our team of dedicated and skilled employees has made our Maryland facilities a successful part of Berry Plastics.“
